The Mediterannean Diet made EASY!

Research now shows that 3 key essentials from the traditional Mediterranean diet may help us lead a healthier life for longer. We have known for sometime, and science is now confirming, that Mediterranean people living a traditional lifestyle have led healthier lives in their old age than nearly anywhere else in the world. Extensive scientific studies have revealed 3 essential components of the traditional Mediterranean diet so that we can all enjoy some of the benefits.
For decades scientists worldwide have been studying the traditional Mediterranean lifestyle to figure out why Mediterranean people aged so well. Was it the sun, the fresh sea air, the laid back attitude … perhaps it was their sense of family or even mama’s cooking? FINALLY it seems there is an answer! Mediterranean people who as they aged lived the healthiest and most active lives, had some dietary habits in common ... their diet was high in olives and olive oil, they drank red wine regularly and ate fatty fish!

How do Mediterraneans eat so much fatty food and stay healthy? Professor Jack Masquelier discovered what is known in scientific circles as the French paradox – a high fat diet with good heart health. In today’s busy world of fast living and fast food it sounds like the French knew something we should all know about! Well it seems that a toast to health and wellness and some red wine with lunch or dinner is part of the answer.

ESSENTIAL 1 – Red Wine
What makes red wine effective in counterbalancing the effects of a fatty diet? Professor Masquelier’s findings on red wine show that OPCs, the plant nutrients found in red wine, have the ability to help support eye, heart and vascular health and helps fight the signs of premature aging. Not only that but red wine also assists our bodies in maintaining hyaluronic acid levels, which helps keep our skin healthy, hydrated and plumped.

ESSENTIAL 2 – Olive Oil
Olives and olive oil are used in kitchens throughout the Mediterranean and not just because they taste good! Hydroxytyrosol, the powerful antioxidant found in olives is believed to help maintain healthy cardiovascular function and collagen levels, protect against free radical damage as well as supporting our immune systems.

ESSENTIAL 3 – Fatty Fish
Why fatty fish in particular? The unsaturated fats in oily fish, known as Omega-3 fatty acids, are thought to do everything from support normal blood cholesterol levels, brain function, heart function and blood pressure to assisting overall mood and wellbeing.

The good news is that now we can all enjoy the benefits of the Mediterranean diet! Research shows that regardless of where someone is from, the traditional Mediterranean diet can lead to a healthier life for longer. The traditional Mediterranean lifestyle and today’s realities. Whilst it’s nice to imagine enjoying long leisurely lunches of home grown and home cooked ingredients, eating freshly caught fish and sipping red wine on a sun filled terrace every day, for most of us, it’s just not possible outside of holidays and special occasions. The reality of our everyday lives is busy days, packed with rushed meals and too much to do.

PHYTOLOGIC - Mediterranean Dietary Supplement
You may not have time to prepare traditional mediterranean meals so now there is a supplement to help you! Phytologic Mediterranean Diet contains 420mg of concentrated Omega 3 triglycerides, 3g Grape Seed extract, and 1.35g Olive fruit juice. Recomended dosage in 1-2 capsules/day according to need. 'B Vitamins' - a run down!

B vitamins are one of the most commonly requested/purchased nutritional supplements, but what are they? what do they do? how do they work? and what foods can you get them from if you're not into taking supplements? Here's a little run down, written my Maryl Celiz from HLife Daily (one of my favorite sites....check it out here)

'Talk about a power team: Vitamin B Complex refers to all the B vitamins (B1-B12), which work together to offer a great deal of nervous system and cardiac support and are therefore critical in stress management. Discovered in the first part of the 20th century and studied extensively ever since, these vitamins are usually referred to and distributed as a group supplement, but they have individual names and functions:

✦ Thiamin (vitamin B1) is crucial for cardiac, muscular and nervous system function.✦ Riboflavin (vitamin B2) important for red blood cell production. Helps release energy from carbs. (Riboflavin is destroyed by exposure to light, so store sources in dark containers).✦ Niacin (vitamin B3) is involved in cellular energy production as well as in the digestive and nervous systems (also vital for great skin) It’s the only one that can have toxic effects if taken in excess.✦ Pantothenic acid (vitamin B5) is necessary for normal growth and development and helps break down food and use it in the body.✦ Pyridoxine (vitamin B6)) supports the immune system by helping to produce antibodies and maintaining healthy red blood cells. Breaks down proteins (the more protein you eat, the more B6 you need).✦ Biotin (vitamin B7 aka vitamin H) helps break down protein and carbohydrates and helps the body make hormones (also key for abundant, shiny hair).✦ Folic acid (vitamin B9) is essential for normal nervous system development of the fetus while in the womb. It helps in the making and maintenance of DNA and red blood cells.✦ Cobalamin (vitamin B12) is important for proper nervous system function, maintenance of red blood cells, and energy production.

According to the American Cancer Society, with the exception of pregnant or lactating women (who need more folic acid than others), a balanced diet of whole unprocessed foods that includes five daily servings of fruits and vegetables as well as grains is the general recommendation for most people to get all the B vitamins their bodies need. Though much isn’t needed in the form of quantity, B vitamins are water soluble, which means the body doesn’t store them and excess leaves through the urine. This means it is important to replenish them daily. Deficiencies are uncommon but can cause anemia, chronic fatigue, and depression as well as muscle cramps, hair loss and eczema, so make sure you’re eating the right foods to replenish what your body uses to battle stress and keep your nerves, blood and muscles healthy.

Sources: Green leaves, legumes and whole grains are major sources for most B vitamins. B1 is found in potatoes, kidney beans and whole grains. B2 is found in nuts, whole grains and green leafy veggies. B3 is found in nuts, whole grains, and dried beans. B5 is found in almost all foods, including broccoli and other veggies in the cabbage family. B6 is found in beans, nuts, potatoes, wheat germ, and bananas. B7 is made by intestinal bacteria and is also in peanuts, bananas, mushrooms, watermelon, and grapefruit. B9 is found in green leafy vegetables, mushrooms, nuts, peas, dried beans, citrus fruits, and wheat bread. B12 is made by intestinal bacteria and is found in nutritional yeast'.

Systemic Enzymes: The Three Musketeers – Serrapeptase, Nattokinase, Lumbrokinase

A few months back you may remember a post about Digestive Enzymes Vs Systemic Enzymes (you can revisit it here), but lets take a closer look at the 3 key systemic enzymes.

Serrapeptase
Serrapeptase is born in the intestine of the silk worm, where it is produced by bacteria and used by the silk worm to digest its cocoon. It is now produced in the lab with the help of a non-pathogenic bacteria. Also known by its pet name serratiopeptidase, serrapeptase is a proteolytic enzyme best known for its ability to: Reduce inflammation , removing wastes and improving healing time, Block pain inducers, Degrade non-living tissues/scar tissue/cysts, Break down circulating toxins/cellular debris (supporting the immune system), Breakdown mucus (great for sinusitis), Breakdown blood clots, as well as preventing swelling and fluid retention! Serrapeptase is often combined with the anti-inflammatory enzymes bromelain and papain as a blend for pain, inflammation and scar tissue.

Nattokinase
Nattokinase originated from the traditional Japanese fermented soybean dish ‘Natto’, this enzyme is produced by the bacterium Bacillus subtillis during the fermentation process. This enzyme acts quite specifically in the cardiovascular system to: Break down fibrin blood clots, reducing blood viscosity (thickness) and blood pressure , Improve blood flow to all areas of the body, Break down scar tissue , and acts as an antioxidant by protecting against LDL oxidation
Nattokinase is often combined with serrapeptase and other enzymes for heart health and fibrin breakdown.

Lumbrokinase
Lumbrokinase is made up of a group of six enzymes originally derived from the earthworm family, and has been used with alot of success in Chinese hospitals over the last couple of decades. This enzyme has an affinity with blood flow, and is used most commonly for its ability to aid in conditions of hypercoagulation, where there is too much blood clotting and the bodies’ normal mechanisms to reduce blood viscosity are not functioning properly.

Unfortunately in Australia, there are no manufacturers of these 3 systemic enzymes, however you can order them quite easily through Return 2 Health (from NZ), if you'd like to check them out click here, or give us a bell if you'd like some more information.

How Safe Is Your Nail Polish?

As you may have noticed, in the last couple of years there has been alot of talk about the toxic chemicals and synthetic ingredients found in cosmetic products. While its horrible to know that these nasties have been hiding in our bathroom cabinets for yonks, its also great to know that now there are so many alternative, safe brands coming out into the spotlight, such as lavera makeup, santorini self tan, nude by nature, atlantis watercolour hair dye, the list goes on and will hopefully continue to do so (yippee!). Ive noticed though that there has not been too much talk about nail polish, and the toxic chemicals lurking in those pretty little bottles.... What are they? What do they do? Are polishes just as good without them? Who makes polishes free of these chemicals ('the Big 3')?
'What are the Big 3 toxic chemicals?
The chemicals we’re talking about are Dibutyl Phthalate (DBP), Formaldehyde and Toluene.
What do they do?
Dibutyl Phthalate (DBP) is a plasticiser to prevent chips and cracks. DBP is an oily liquid that is soluble in fat and slightly soluble in water. It is not very volatile so it does not evaporate readily into the atmosphere. Over 75% of DBP is used as a plasticiser in polymers such as PVC, 14% is used in adhesives, 7% in printing inks and 3% in other miscellaneous uses, including sealants and grouting agents used in construction as well as consumer products such as cosmetics.
Formaldehyde is used in some nail hardeners. It is a resin, making the polish tough and resilient. While the resin is manufactured from formaldehyde, once the product becomes a resin, the formaldehyde is chemically changed and essentially no longer present. So while formaldehyde is grouped in with toluene and DBP in marketing statements and considered one of the Big 3, it isn’t actually an issue unless you have a reaction to the formaldehyde resin. The bottom line, you should be aware of formaldehyde in your treatment products, not polish.
Toluene is a solvent that makes the polish easy to apply, and is commonly used as an industrial solvent for the manufacturing of paints, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, and rubber. Toluene is found in gasoline, acrylic paints, varnishes, lacquers, paint thinners, adhesives, glues, rubber cement, airplane glue, and shoe polish. At room temperature, toluene is a colorless, sweet smelling, volatile liquid.
So, Why are they bad?
There are risks and effects caused by exposure to each of these chemicals. But, whether or not limited exposure to polish will actually result in those effects is yet to be determined....but lets check em out; Toluene is a human reproductive toxin. Formaldehyde is a carcinogen that has been shown to cause cancer in lab animals. Dibutyl Phthalate is a chemical used in making plastics. It is known to cause infertility, as well as uterine problems in women and testicular cancer in men. Dibutyl Phthalate is one of the most toxic chemicals to the human body, and most cosmetic companies are discontinuing it’s use. Pregnant women should be especially careful to avoid the use of dibutyl phthalate because it has been shown to harm a developing male fetus. It is up to all of us to be educated about the chemicals we use in and on our bodies.
Check out what Dr Mercola has to say!
"Women of reproductive age should avoid using certain nail polishes, perfumes, and hair sprays containing an ingredient known to cause lifelong reproductive impairments in male rats, The Environmental Working Group, an environmental advocacy group, is cautioning.
The ingredients in question are dibutyl phthalates (DBP) industrial chemicals that are used as plastic softeners and solvents in a wide variety of products such as: Nail Polish, Perfume, Hair Spray, Toys, Detergents, and Food packages.
The warning was based in large part on a recently completed CDC study (Environ Health Perspect 2000 Oct;108:972-82) , in which the investigators found levels of the metabolized compound in women of childbearing age.
"Women of reproductive age (20-40 years) were found to have significantly higher levels of monobutyl phthalate, a reproductive and developmental toxicant in rodents, than other age/gender groups. From a public health perspective, these data provide evidence that phthalate exposure is both higher and more common than previously suspected," the CDC investigators wrote.
The investigators also speculated that the higher levels in women of reproductive age were due to the use of cosmetics such as perfume, nail polishes, and hair sprays. The extensive use of these products among women is probably leading to the inhalation and absorption of this chemical through the lungs, the investigators said.
The report from the Environmental Working Group (EWG) (LINK) entitled "Beauty Secrets" suggests that the substance may be responsible for the following problems, which have increased during the 1970s and '80s: Declining sperm counts, Increase in sexual deformities, and an increase in testicular cancer.
The EWG says that getting any immediate regulatory action passed is virtually impossible, due to the fact that the associations are difficult to impossible to prove. Under the current regulations, the responsibility of proving that there is a public health threat from cosmetics primarily falls upon US health authorities rather than the manufacturers".

Concerned? I know I am. But freet not, because we have good news! Come November, we will be stocking 'Butter London' nail polishes and treatment products, which are Big 3 Free, and wont set you back anymore than a normal cosmetic brand nail polish! Check out all the colours (below)

Sustainable Spring!

Spring has finally sprung here in Melbourne, and we have plently of new products in store to celebrate the warmer weather, yippee! There's a great new organic self tanning spray (Diva Society, Santorini Tan) which you can check out here, and we're now also stocking all of the Sukin range, sneak a peek here.

A few of my personal favorites are the 'Organic Essence Eco Tube' lip balms, and 'Preserve' toothbrushes.

One day a yoghurt cup, next day its a toothbrush!...Preserve only use recycled yoghurt cups made from #5polypropelyene (BPA free) to make these nifty toothbrushes, in a variety of colours and your choice of soft, medium or ultrasoft....very cool indeed!

Did you know that every year in the U.S alone, there are 250million lip balm tubes discarded?
And what's worse is that as they break down, each BPA laden tube leaches hormone disrupters and carcinogens into the environment.
Well....the good news is that now you can get Eco-tubes (hoorah!), you simply cannot get any more biodegradable than this lovely little lip balm from organic essence. These balms are 100% organic, 100% biodegradable packaging, and even the cute little labels are printed in soy ink, and stuck on with organic adhesive

Alternatives to Nasty Sweetners

Aspartame is the technical name for the brand names NutraSweet and Equal. It was approved for dry goods in 1981 and for carbonated beverages in 1983.

Aspartame accounts for over 75 percent of the adverse reactions to food additives reported to the FDA. A few of the 90 different documented symptoms listed in the report as being caused by aspartame include: Headaches/migraines, dizziness, seizures, nausea, numbness, muscle spasms, weight gain, rashes, depression, fatigue, irritability, tachycardia, insomnia, vision problems, hearing loss, heart palpitations, breathing difficulties, anxiety attacks, slurred speech, loss of taste, tinnitus, vertigo, memory loss, and joint pain.

The following chronic illnesses can be triggered or worsened by ingesting of aspartame: Brain tumors, multiple sclerosis, epilepsy, chronic fatigue syndrome, parkinson's disease, alzheimer's, mental retardation, lymphoma, birth defects, fibromyalgia, and diabetes.

Why do they cause such effects?

Aspartate and glutamate act as neurotransmitters in the brain by facilitating the transmission of information from neuron to neuron. Too much aspartate or glutamate in the brain kills certain neurons by allowing the influx of too much calcium into the cells. This influx triggers excessive amounts of free radicals, which kill the cells. The neural cell damage that can be caused by excessive aspartate and glutamate is why they are referred to as "excitotoxins." They "excite" or stimulate the neural cells to death.

The risk to infants, children, pregnant women, the elderly and persons with certain chronic health problems from excitotoxins are great. Even the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB), which usually understates problems encourages people to avoid these products.

So if we want to keep sugar to a minimum but have a sweet tooth; what are the alternatives?

Stevia: A south American plant with a super-sweet taste! Much sweeter than sugar, full of nutrients and calorie free! It is available in powder, tablets or liquid

Xylitol: A natural substance found in fibrous vegetables and fruit. Xylitol looks, feels, and tastes exactly like sugar. Although that is where the similarities end! Xylitol is really sugar's mirror image. While sugar wreaks havoc on the body, xylitol heals and repairs. Xylitol is a five-carbon sugar which means that it is anti-microbial, preventing the growth of bacteria. While sugar is acid-forming, xylitol is alkaline enhancing.

From a dietary perspective, it contains 40% fewer calories and 75% less carbohydrates than refined sugar. It has been shown in numerous clinical studies to be very slowly metabolized with a GI of only 7 compared to Sugar which is 100!

So there you have it! There is no need to add chemicals to your food when nature has given you an alternative! We have these in store so come down and have a chat to one of our naturopaths.

Detox Diary - Stretch it Out!

....3 days in...and the ol' caffeine cravings have gone, hoorah!
I've found that pilates, stretching and breath work has really helped with the headaches, muscle aches and pains, and mental fogginess, so my plan is to do atleast an hour of solomon pilates a day for the rest of the detox....i've also stumbled across an amazing resource on the net, called the stretching handbook (check it out here http://www.thestretchinghandbook.com/). 10 Day Detox - full steam ahead!

Michelle and I (Hannah) decided a few weeks ago that a internal 'Spring Cleanse' was a little overdue, with my last detox being over a year ago now, and with summer fast approaching, there seemed to be no better time than NOW! After much deliberation, we decided to do a 10 day Gluten/Cane Sugar/RedMeat/Processed/Preservative/Additive/Caffeine/Alcohol/Potato free diet, and supplement with the following products, to achieve a great digestive, kidney, and skin cleanse:

- Bioceuticals Cell Clear
- Synergy Super Greens
- Metagenics Ultra Flora
- Nutrition Care Gut Relief
- Orthoplex Acidolphilus Fibre
- Cell Foods
- Lifestream Aloe Vera Juice
- Herbal Tincture - golden seal, st marys thistle, schizandra, tumeric, rhodiola, and nettle.

We were able to structure the supplements for just AM and PM, which is handy if you dont feel like carrying around 10 million supplements a day in your handbag!

So....currently we're up to our 2nd day....both of us we're struck down with 'brain fogginess' and some nausea both yesterday and today, but this seems to be going away now (crossing our fingers!), staying away from coffee seems to have been the biggest hurdle so far. During the next 8 days we will be sharing our thoughts, symptoms, and favorite detox recipes with you on this blog, stay tuned, and please feel free to leave any comments or questions you might have about detoxing and cleansing :)

Sun Warrior Sprouted Vegan Protein!

Made with 85% protein, Sun Warrior has the highest amount of non-soy, raw whole grain sprouted vegan protein available on the Australian market!

By using a 'third generation process' Sun Warrior have created what I think is the best tasting vegetable protein that I've ever tried. It has a silky smooth texture (unlike soy and other rice based protein powders) that blends really well into water, juice or soy/dairy/almond milk.

By using a process, which combines the sprouted endosperm with the bran from Raw Sprouted Whole Grain Brown Rice, produces a hypoallergenic protein containing 9 essential amino acids, and packed full of natural enzymes (due to the low temperature at which this process is carried out)....Sounding good hey! Well how about this then - Sun Warrior Protein has a 98% Correlation rate to Mothers Milk and a 98.2% digestion efficiency giving it one of the highest digestibility and efficiency ratings of any other protein source (even compared to whey!)

Naturally Rich in Vitamins and Minerals. Sun Warrior Protein contains high amounts of Antioxidants, Tocopherols, and Tocotrienols and other essential nutrients — such as thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, phosphorous, iron and potassium. There has also been a direct correlation between the use of Sun Warrior Protein and the absorption of vitamins.

Because Sun Warrior Protein is so easy to digest, it is safe for infants, elderly and hypersensitive people —there is actually talk of the 'World Health Organization' considering using Sun Warrior Protein to feed malnourished individuals because of the hypoallergenic profile and superior absorption that it has been shown to have. Furthermore, a current clinical trial has shown promising results in the use of Sun Warrior Protein aiding in absorption of vitamins is AIDS patients, where other proteins have not provided any synergistic effects. Impressed? I am!

Other clinical trials are being conducted into the use of Sun Warrior Protein and weight loss, diabetes, and potential cholesterol lowering effects.

Sun Warrior protein is made from 100% certified organic rice using only organic enzyme processing. Sun Warrior Protein is available in 1kg packs, in Vanilla, Chocolate and Natural flavors. Want more info? Come in and chat with us, or visit their website http://www.sunwarrior.com.au/

Looking for a great Calcium Supplement?? Look No Further!

Proper pH balance is essential in maintaining good health. Differing pH determines the way our bodies utilize enzymes, minerals, and vitamins; for any imbalance in the body it should be among the first factors to consider.

What is pH? Generally speaking, pH or “p (otential of ) H (ydrogen)” is the unit used to show the neutrality of the body, or its level of acidity or alkalinity. When pH levels are over acid or over, the consequences can be damaging. In this unbalanced state cells throughout the whole body may become contaminated by their own toxic waste and die, leading to disruption of cellular functions.

Coral calcium supplements are a great option for a highly bioavailable calcium source, but Corazyme supplies the added benefits of Zymitol and other key vitamins making this an exceptional formula.

Zymitol is a systemic enzyme blend with important additions like, MSM, alpha lipoic acid, magnesium, and rutin. It is also available as an individual product. Zymitol was designed to alliviate symptoms of aging and balance normal body processes.

Uniquely, Zymitol promotes better absorption of coral. Vitamin D, vitamin K, and Ester-C brand (vitamin C), that are all essential ingredients for your body to absorb and hold onto the nutrients in marine coral. Vitamin D3 regulates uptake of calcium, magnesium, and phosphorus, while vitamin K is crucial in promoting healthy calcium retention in the bone and in preventing harmful deposits.

Ester-C is a patented form of Vitamin C that is pH-balanced. It is non acidic and gentle on your stomach. Ester-C contains concentrations of calcium and metabolites, which enhance the absorption of vitamin C by the body. Did you know that calcium is the single most abundant mineral in the human body? When your daily intake of calcium is too low, your body will borrow what it needs from your bones, and use it for other critical functions. Regular exercise and a healthy diet with enough calcium help maintain improved bone health. They may also reduce the risk of osteoporosis, a condition often associated with calcium deficiencies.

Calcium may also promote healthy heart function, normal immune operation, and is integral in a host of necessary enzyme reactions. Corazyme also contains a blend of many other important minerals and trace elements.

The Eyes Say It All!

Did you know that you can book in for an Iridology Session at Evelyn Faye Nutrition?

Yep, its true! Call us to make an appointment (03) 9686 0086

So what exactly is Iridology & how does it work?

Iridology - The Eyes Say It All (By Susan M Thompson)

"Looking into a persons eyes, can give you an idea of how healthy and what type of mood they may be in.
Look at a young child, and when they are happy and excited - their eyes are sparkling, like the sun shining on water during a sunny day. When feeling sick their eyes loose that spark of vitality, becoming quiet and dull.

Iridology offers an alternative idea on how to improve your health. Iridology is a science that studies the structures and analysis of patterns within the iris of the eye.

Doing this locates areas and various stages of inflammation throughout the body. The iris is the part of your eye that shows colour, e.g. blue, brown, green, hazel. It reveals the bodies' constitution (general health), strengths, weaknesses and phases that the human body goes through in a person's way of life.

In the 1800s, a young lad by the name of Ignatz Von Peczely caught an owl in his garden. He noticed a black line rising in the owl's eye, after accidentally breaking its leg during its struggle. Once well again, he noticed the appearance of crooked white lines across the black area of the owl's eyes. He later became a physician and had many an opportunity to study the irises of patients.

The more he studied he came to believe that a reflex relationship existed, between tissue changes in the body and iris markings. He developed the first iris chart, which has been revised and updated as the years have gone on.
The iris is made up of hundreds of thousands of nerve endings, which are said to be connected by impulses to every tissue of the body via the brain and the nervous system.

Nerve fibres (trabecula) respond specifically to tissue and organ conditions with a corresponding physical reflex manifested in the iris as lesions and colour variations (i.e. red lines on the white part of the eye).

The iris chart (formed over many years by practitioners such as Dr Bernard Jensen) represents the body organs and tissues similar to a map. A diagnosis is made by superimposing (placing the chart) over an iris image projection, allowing detailed observation of the medical data recorded there.

A complete iris analysis can show whether a person has general good health or poor, depending upon the density of the iris fibres. Patterns, structures, colours, degrees of lightness and darkness in the iris tell if an area of the body is strong or weak. Toxic accumulation levels, nutritional and chemical imbalances can be observed as well.

Iridology will not show a specific medical condition or disease per se. Body tissues indicate tendency towards conditions of "dis-ease" (disease being abnormal) often before symptoms appear to a person. Iridology will not reveal surgery performed under anaesthesia as nerve impulses are discontinued. And iridology can't locate parasites, gallstones, or germ life, yet will indicate the presence of inflammation and toxic conditions that are a refuge for their development.

Iridology has the potential to be of great benefit for health care as it has the ability to potentially forewarn of approaching difficulties or signs of "disease". By allowing the practitioner to determine what is happening inside the body from a simple, painless, and economical external vantage point. In effect, iridology can reveal how well your body is functioning".

Digestive Enzymes Vs Systemic Enzymes

We have alot of customers asking us what the differences are between digestive enzymes and systemic enzymes....and I remember being quite confused when I first starting ready about products such as 'vitalzym' and serrapeptase supplements.... I stumbled across this article on the return 2 health website (a wonderful NZ company) and thought it would be a good one to share (view the original article at http://www.return2health.net/articles/enzyme-articles:

You barely know what an enzyme is; let alone what kind of enzyme supplement you need.
Well, it’s good to know that there are just two broad categories of enzyme supplements:
Digestive enzymes, which aid the digestive process directly and
Systemic enzymes, which provide support throughout the body.
These two groups of enzymes are distinct from one another and have their own specific jobs.

Digestive Enzymes
Digestive enzyme supplements are designed to be taken with each meal to complement the body’s own digestive enzymes produced primarily by the pancreas. The pancreas secretes enzymes to breakdown the main food groups entering the body, including: amylases for carbohydrate digestion, lipases for digesting fats and proteases for protein digestion. But this doesn’t always cut the mustard.
Supplemental digestive enzymes go the extra mile: they contain the above enzymes as well as others that the body does not specifically generate, which aid digestion of specific types of fibres or carbohydrates. One example of this is cellulose: an enzyme which helps us breakdown cellulose – a plant fibre otherwise indigestible to humans.

Why do we need a supplement if we make most of the enzymes ourselves?
Good question. In a state of optimal health and nutrition, yes, we do make adequate amounts of digestive enzymes ourselves and obtain others from the fresh raw foods we eat. But throw in stress, chronic disease, poor nutrition and food allergies – to mention just a few of life’s frivolities – and suddenly the body is not so well equipped.
Also the number of enzymes produced by the body is limited over our lifetime. As we age, the level of enzymes we produce declines. Since we rely heavily on enzymes to unlock nutrients from the food we eat, the importance of good digestion with adequate enzymes becomes paramount to maintain good health.

Systemic Enzymes
Systemic enzymes on the other hand are designed to be taken on an empty stomach; allowing them to be absorbed directly into the circulation, to support the body where needed. These systemic enzymes can help:
Maintain healthy immune functions
Maintain healthy blood flow & circulation
Maintain healthy joints
Support normal, healthy inflammatory processes
Assist with muscle soreness after exercise

There are many types of Systemic Enzymes used such as:
Serrapeptase – derived from the silk worm
Nattokinase – derived from the Japanese fermented soybean dish “Natto”
Lumbrokinase – a group of six enzymes derived from the earth worm
Bromelain – from pineapple
Papain – from papaya

As well as other enzymes like proteases and lipases. Whether enzymes work locally to assist digestion or systemically to work throughout the body is determined by how the enzymes are taken (i.e. with food or without food). Digestive enzymes can assist systemically if taken away from food, while systemic enzymes can assist digestion if taken with food. For best results, enzymes should be used as they have been designed.
Supplementary enzymes can work wonders for many different types of conditions, but it’s best to consult with your healthcare professional to ensure you’ve found the product best suited to your needs.

Beetroot Juice and Blood Pressure

Beetroot juice “could save your life” claimed the Daily Mail (June 29, 2010), and they're right!

Beetroot juice contains nitrates, chemicals that reduces blood pressure and therefore cut the risk of heart disease and stroke. The article (here http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-1290434/Drinking-beetroot-juice-dramatically-lowers-risk-heart-disease-strokes.html) was based on the results of a clinical trial where patients who drank a glass of beetroot juice a day were found to have significantly lower blood pressure within 24 hours.

"The findings, published in Hypertension, the journal of the American Heart Association, could now see beetroot juice being used as a treatment. Researchers at William Harvey Research Institute at Queen Mary University in London compared patients who were given a 250ml glass of beetroot juice a day with those who took nitrate tablets.
They found that the two methods were equally successful in reducing blood pressure.
The researchers concluded that the nitrates which naturally occur in beetroot are the cause of its beneficial effects. They produce a gas known as nitric oxide in the blood which widens blood vessels and arteries and lowers blood pressure".

Do we sell Beetroot juice here at EFN South Melbourne? You bet'cha! We stock the Biotta certified organic Beetroot Juice, and I can promise you that it is quite delicious aswell!

Herbal Medicine for the Skin

Got a skin problem? Did you know that adding specific herbs to creams and using them topically can aid in the soothing and healing of different skin conditions? Whilst medicated creams can offer relief they are often unsuitable for long term use and more often than not the problem just keeps coming back to haunt you! Herbal creams are safe, effective, and offer a great alternative especially on young and sensitive skin.

Here are some herbal creams you may find effective for your skin, if more than one herb sound like it would do you good you might find a combination product or come in store and we can make you a cream with the specific herbs you need.

Calendula: Our favourite herb for red, inflamed and irritated skin. Calendula is anti-inflammatory and antiseptic therefore helps to soothe burns, minor cuts, eczema and nappy rash.

Witch Hazel (Hamamelis): An astringent, anti inflammatory and antiseptic herb, this has proven effectiveness for the treatment of haemorrhoids both relieving symptoms and aiding the healing process. You can also use this herb as a treatment for, or as a preventative of varicose veins.

Thuja: Thuja is an anti fungal herb and therefore brilliant for treatment of Tinea, Worts, Candida and ringworm.

Nettle (Urtica): A soothing, demulcent herb, we use this to reduce itching. Nettle is great to add to other creams such as Calendula for eczema or sunburn; or to Witch Hazel for Haemorrhoids. Often if you can reduce the itch it allows the skin time to heal faster.

Tea Tree: God ol’ Tea tree! The original antiseptic used for generations to assist in preventing cuts, boils, skin infections, insect bites and pimples from becoming infected.

This is only a small list of the herbs which can be used topically to aid skin conditions. Unfortunately skin conditions can be notoriously difficult to treat; combining topical treatment with whole body treatment can result in finding the cause of the problem and therefore more sustainable improvements. Come in or message us for more details.

My Favorite NEW Product!

Yesterday we had an exciting delivery from Return 2 Health, with a couple of new products that im just busting to try! One of which is called 'VPure', a 100% vegan EPA/DHA supplement (actually stronger than alot of fish oils out there on the market these days!).

What is VPure?
VPure is made from an algae, that is grown in organically controlled conditions (not in the sea) which does not interfere with marine eco-systems, has no impact on fish stock and their food sources, and is totally 100% sustainable....yipee! :) (Here's a link to a trailer for the documentary "End of the Line", a pretty horrific reminder about what 'over fishing' and the fish oil industry is doing to our oceans, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bedirwk95Oc&feature=player_embedded)
The Omega 3 fats in this algae are rich in EPA (anti-inflammatory) and DHA (great for cognitive function, and anti-ageing) and free from the toxins and heavy metals that accumulate in oil-bearing fish, meaning that VPure is the safest option for pregnant women and children. Also, lets not forget those people out there with allergies towards fish and fish products, what a great alternative!

How Much EPA/DHA in VPure?
Heaps! Per capsule you'll be getting 350mg DHA, and 50mg EPA, plus ALA's (alpha-linoleic acid - another good guy to have on board!). The capsules are 100% vegan, so are gelatin free.

I think this might be my favorite new product here at Evelyn Faye Nutrtion! If you want anymore information about V-Pure just visit there website, http://www.v-pure.com/.

What's all this about Acid Alkaline Balance?

As a Naturopath, I am always encouraging clients to concentrate on an 'alkalizing' diet, as im sure you have heard before that an alkaline body is a healthy body, and an acidic body is a dis-eased body....But do we know what this means? I found the following article, written by Maryl Celiz for HLife (http://hlifemedia.com/) which helps to explain exactly what this means (Thanks Maryl!)

Being aware of the delicate pH balance of our bodies is an important part of a healthy lifestyle. This is directly affected by the foods we eat. Let’s explore how.

When it comes to the body and nutrition, it’s really all about the cell. The cell has to do a job, which is to keep us alive by providing us with energy to do what we need to do. The thing is, in this energy-generating process, the cell also creates waste byproducts. This is where pH comes in. The natural pH of blood is 7.365, but cellular byproducts are lower than that, what we would call acidic. Refreshing our memories from chem lab in school: The pH scale goes from 1-14, with 1 being the most acidic and 14 the most alkaline or “basic”. A pH of 7 is considered neutral. At 7.365, the healthy pH of our blood is slightly alkaline, while cellular byproducts are the opposite. Here is where our role in helping balance this out comes in – and the importance of food in this process.

Dr. Robert Young, a microbiologist and pioneer in alkalinity research, the problem with obesity and derivative diseases in this country is that “it’s not that we’re overweight, it’s that we’re over acid”. As Dr. Young explains in his book, The pH Miracle, the acid that is a natural waste product of cellular respiration needs to be eliminated through urination, defecation, perspiration and respiration in order for us to stay healthy. If we cannot eliminate the acid, it stays in our bodies in the form of body fat. Why fat? Because acid is corrosive and toxic to us, both internally and externally, and in order to keep our internal environment from becoming damaged with this acid that is not being eliminated (acid burns the skin, so you can imagine what it would do to our internal tissues and organs), fat molecules come to the rescue and sort of “trap” the acid molecules so they won’t “burn” us, and then these fat and acid (toxins) bundles take up residence in various peripheral areas of our bodies, such as our hips, stomachs, butts, etc…

Young and other researchers who swear by life blood analysis, it is an overly acid body that is the perfect environment for the development of cancer, obesity and yeast overgrowth, among other diseases. Corrosive thoughts that generate stress as well as a diet high in acid-forming foods and low in alkaline-forming foods that help “cleanse” or balance the blood, and even acidic water are the culprits. Water is supposed to have a neutral pH of 7, but as it is “processed” to get to us at the grocery store, it may become acidic (you’ve heard of acid rain, haven’t you? Same concept, only the acidity in the rain comes from our sadly polluted cities.)
When it comes to food, knowing which ones will generate acid and which ones will be alkaline in your body is a must. Following is an example of some foods and how they effect the pH balance of your body, so that you can start to get an idea of how what you eat reacts in your body.

Acid-forming foods include:- Sugar- Meat- Shellfish- Eggs- Dairy- Processed and refined foods- Dried fruits- Alcohol- Coffee- Chocolate- Sodas- White and wheat breads- Carbonated water- Acidic water
Alkaline-forming foods include:- Green leafy vegetables- Celery- Cucumber- Good fats- Seaweed- Avocado- Limes- Lemons- Grapefruit- Papaya- Pineapple- Watermelon

See any patterns here? Veggies and fruits top the alkaline list, while meat, dairy, and processed foods top the acid list. Still, this is a rough list. The pH scale is a range, and each foods falls on a different spot on the scale. In other words, some foods can be slightly alkaline-forming, while others are very alkaline-forming. The same goes for acid-forming ones: some, like beans, are slightly acid-forming and closer to neutral, while sugary drinks like sodas are way acidic. Keep this in mind when planning meals.

For those of you being exposed to the idea of body pH for the first time, but who are familiar with the glycemic index, this may be helpful. Dr. Grabriel Cousens, author of Spiritual Nutrition, puts it simply, relating it to blood sugar: A low-glycemic diet is alkaline and beneficial. A high-glycemic diet is acidic and unhealthy.

Another way to think of it is this: Foods that contain a large amount of chlorine, phosphorus, sulfur and nitrogen – for example, most animal products – tend to be acid forming. Foods rich in calcium, potassium, magnesium and sodium – for example, most vegetables – tend to be alkaline forming.
So how do we apply all of this to our healthy lifestyles? It’s about balance, and we can begin to balance our bodies by keeping our minds as free of stressful thoughts as possible, checking the pH of our water (you can always add fresh lime juice to your water to make it more alkaline) and following an 80-20 rule when it comes to acid/alkaline foods: 80% alkaline-forming, 20% acid-forming. By the way, Dr. Young explains that over-exercising is not good either, as it produces lactic acid in the tissues and makes us “fat”. So, exercise for flexibility, strength and cardiovascular (among other) benefits, but don’t kill yourself if weight-loss is what you’re after. Instead, be sure to eat right to help your body maintain its healthy pH balance and the extra fat off of your hips, belly and thighs. If you do exercise a lot because it is your passion, then alkaline-forming foods take on an even more important role in helping you get rid of acid byproducts. Besides protein shakes you may be fond of for tissue repair, be sure to add green juices to your diet. Also, deep breathing makes the blood more alkaline, so do not skip the cool down process. This will help keep the fluids at the right pH levels, waste out, and health in place. Over-acidic people’s personalities are typically described as grouchy, sensitive and exhausted, exhibiting aches, pains, headaches, problems with sleeping and often having tummy trouble and cravings (and therefore anxiety). So, taking the proper steps to balance your body’s pH will help maintain the health of your body AND mind, and help you project the best version of your own personality without the added emotional imbalances that result from an overly-acidic diet. It’s interesting to no that the acronym for the Standard American Diet – processed foods, too much meat and dairy – is SAD. Wouldn’t you rather be happy and healthy? Take care of your body pH by eating a vegetable-rich plant-based diet and watch how your mood changes.
